The Virgin All-Time Album Top 1000 List - 2000

“So, what is the greatest album of all time? Now in it’s third edition, All-time Top 1000 Albums is as close to a definitive answer as you can get. It’s the chart of charts, the poll of polls, based on the widest range of views and opinions ever collected: more than 200,000 votes collected by post, fax and email from all over the world”. Published by Virgin in 2000.

At the beginning of the book there are several Top 50 lists for individual genres. I have reprinted some of them, after the main list, concentrating on the ones based on votes, rather than Larkin’s personal selections.

The rules on compilations is a bit odd: “…we do not allow them to be counted because the idea is for the album to be a showcase of songs put together by an artist at a particular time… [apart from] the odd renegade like Legend by Bob Marley and the Wailers or Big Ones by Aerosmith… as there were so many votes for them I would have distorted the final picture if I had not included them”. (So if enough people vote for a compilation it’ll get in, even though people aren’t allowed to vote for them!).

Oasis’ Be Here Now has had a rather spectacular change in fortunes: No 36 in 1998, it’s now at No 459!!

Jazz – 50 All Time Overlooked Albums

“Overlooked in the opinion of the author, but very difficult to narrow down to just 50. These are jazz albums I know well, and in a short time have grown to love. I came to jazz quite late, but that does not exclude me from having an opinion. This list is not for the jazz buff – I have experienced enough of them to know that their list would be deliberately different and elitist. This 50 is meant for the ordinary person who discovered Kind of Blue and wants to find out more, but is so intimidated by jazz that he or she does not know where to go. Having experienced this painful transition, I know how it feels. Once you get stuck into this, and assuming you enjoy it, you can hold your head up with confidence”.

Long Forgotten Gems - All Time Top 50

“Some slipped the net, even when first released on vinyl. Many have since become cult classics but have never sold in any quantity. Others recently released and deemed unhip should be investigated immediately and re-appraised. I would not lie to you. Some are yet to be reissued on cd, or have been included on a decent compilation. All come highly recommended. Don’t turn your nose up at artists you would normally not cross the street for. Give it a listen first, then turn your nose up and fire off a ‘come off it’ letter to me”.
